Care for sick family members with Kin Care

Did you know that you can use your sick leave to care for an eligible family member? Under Kin Care an employee may take half of his/her yearly sick leave accrual to attend to the illness of a child, parent, or spouse. The illness does not have to be serious; however, if it is a serious illness, then FMLA/CFRA* will run concurrently with Kin Care. As full-time employees accrue approximately 80 hours of sick leave (short-term and long-term) per year, an employee may be eligible to take up to 40 hours of sick leave a year to care for an eligible family member.

Kin Care goes by calendar year, so every January 1 employees will start over with a possible 40 hours to use. Note that when using Kin Care employees must comply with the 120-Rule: An employee cannot go below 120 hours in his/her long-term sick leave bank during the first sixteen hours off work.
