Thank you for responding to our information flyer regarding a research study on the nutritional status of toddlers raised in total vegetarian (vegan) families. The study has been reviewed and approved by the Institutional Review Board (IRB) of Loma Linda University. The Department of Nutrition and Dietetics at Loma Linda University is seeking to recruit families with total vegetarian children aged 2 years (plus/minus 6 months) that might be willing to participate in our study.
The purpose of this study will be to see if total vegetarian children are receiving the recommended daily amounts of vitamin B6, vitamin B9/folic acid, vitamin B12, and vitamin D. This will be achieved by calculating vitamin intake from 3-day food records (all meals consumed over the course of 3x 24 hours) and comparing the values obtained with the Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA). To increase the validity of our study, we are asking the parents for a urine sample from their toddler that will be used to analyze biomarkers for a healthy vitamin status. All participants will be assigned an identification number in order to maintain anonymity. Nutritional counseling will be offered to parents regarding the nutritional status of their child, and a small gift to parents who submit a urine sample.
Upon filling out the below questionnaire, you will be contacted within one week for further instruction.
