Religion, Public Health faculty examine Sabbath, Society March 21

Dr. Roy Branson and Dr. Joan Sabaté will discuss "The Sabbath Transforming Society" in the Roy Branson and Friends Sabbath School class Sabbath, March 21.

The series of dialogues exploring Adventist Faith and Public Health has already focused on the relevance of redemption and of humanity to the mission of public health. This third presentation of six will discover how the biblical Sabbath was supposed to inaugurate sweeping changes to biblical society--thorough, swift reforms driven by a Sabbath vision of justice and joy.

Roy Branson, PhD, director of the Loma Linda University Center for Christian Bioethics and professor of religion, will lead off the discussion. Dr. Branson has written several articles on the meaning of the Sabbath and edited "Festival of the Sabbath." He directed the Center for Law and Public Policy in Washington, D.C., and conceived of Spectrum magazine, which he edited for 24 years.

Professor of public heath Joan Sabaté, who will respond, earned his MD from the University of Barcelona and his DrPH from Loma Linda University. Dr. Sabaté has headed several International Congresses on Nutrition that brought world authorities and attention to Loma Linda University. He has written the book "Vegetarian Nutrition," and published many authoritative articles in such journals as the New England Journal of Medicine and the Archives of Internal Medicine.

The Roy Branson and Friends Sabbath School class meets from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Sabbath mornings in Centennial Complex room 3111.
