'Portrait of a Lady': Sabbath school examines E.G. White and the roles of contemporary women Feb. 22

Jonathan Butler, Ph.D., will draw a "Portrait of a Lady" for the Roy Branson and Friends Sabbath School class Feb. 22.

Dr. Butler's presentation will be taken from his chapter-length biography of Ellen White included in the soon-to-be-published volume "Ellen Harmon White: American Prophet" to be released by Oxford University Press this year and will compare and contrast Ellen White's role with that of women in 19th century America.

A former professor of history at La Sierra University, Dr. Butler received his M.Div. from the SDA Theological Seminary and his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago, where he studied under Martin Marty, one of America's most renowned historians of American religion. Dr. Butler has taught at Union College as well as at his alma mater, La Sierra University. Dr. Butler has written many influential, anthologized articles that put the Seventh-day Adventist community within the broader intellectual and cultural currents of its time.

The Roy Branson and Friends Sabbath School class meets Sabbaths from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in Centennial Complex room 3111.
