IMPORTANT NIH UPDATE: NIH Data Management & Sharing Plan

NIH Data Management & Sharing Plan:

Effective January 25, 2023, the NIH will implement its New Data Management & Sharing Plan (DMSP) for NIH-funded proposals. The DMSP is required as part of your application and must be included at the time of submission. “The DMS Policy applies to all NIH research, funded or conducted in whole or in part by NIH, that results in the generation of scientific data. The DMS Policy does not apply to research and other activities that do not generate scientific data, for example; research training, fellowships, infrastructure development, and non-research activities. See Research Covered Under the Data Management & Sharing Policy for more details.”

The new FORMS-H application package will include a new “Other Plan(s)” tab in the Research Plan section of your electronic record, this is where the DMSP should be uploaded.

Budgeting for DMSP:  yes, you can and should with reasonable justification include the cost in your budget.  https://sharing.nih.gov/data-management-and-sharing-policy/planning-and-budgeting-for-data-management-and-sharing/budgeting-for-data-management-sharing

You can find access to the NIH-approved template here: https://sharing.nih.gov/data-management-and-sharing-policy/planning-and-budgeting-for-data-management-and-sharing/writing-a-data-management-and-sharing-plan

Note: Research Affairs is exploring developing an institutional data repository.
