Speakers:

KARTHIKA PERUMAL, PHD, JD

Karthika Perumal, Ph.D. is a life sciences patent and transactional attorney in the Houston office of Womble Bond Dickinson (US) LLP.

She has a Ph.D. in Pharmacology from the Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas and a JD from the University of Houston Law Center. She has developed commercialization strategies for several technologies, and participated in the structuring and financing of six startup companies for various pharmaceutical, medical device, and medical informatics products. 

JEFFREY WHITTLE, JD, MBA

Mr. Whittle is co-head of Womble Bond Dickinson’s energy and natural resources industry sector, head of the energy IP sub-sector, and serves as managing partner of the firm’s Houston office. He has been recognized by Chambers USA, The Best Lawyers in America, The WIPR Leaders and Client Choice, among others, for his outstanding work and career as well as his contributions to law, technology and intellectual property. Mr. Whittle is a highly sought-after speaker and author – nationally and internationally – on various intellectual property, licensing and technology topics.

 

Special Guest:

MICHAEL L. METZKER, PHD

An innovator for 30 years, Dr. Metzker has focused his research in three areas: next-generation sequencing (NGS) technology, sequence variation in diabetes, and HIV-1 transmission between individuals. He started his first company, LaserGen, Inc. in 2002. He has served as an Adjunct Associate Professor of Genetics at Baylor College of Medicine, and an Adjunct Associate Professor of Chemistry at Rice University. Dr. Metzker has served as an expert witness for several HIV criminal cases, presenting a breakthrough method of phylogenetic analysis of HIV-1 DNA sequences. During his career, he has held senior-level research positions with Merck Research Laboratories and Applied Biosystems (now Thermo Fisher). He received his B.S. from UC Davis (1984) and his Ph.D. from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX (1996).
