Expected activities

Academic Publications in conjunction with LLUP does not usually work with a writer from the beginning stages, but instead will come to a manuscript after the writer has completed several drafts. Academic Publications engages the LLUP book-publishing process as follows:

  • Schedules traditional or online meetings of Loma Linda Press Board members
  • Maintains minutes and other documents relevant to the business of the press board
  • Coordinates the in-house manuscript selection process
  • Communicates with potential manuscript reviewers
  • Keeps press board members updated regarding manuscripts under review or selected for publication
  • Selects  and supervises freelance editors; or completes the editing, proofreading, layout, and design steps utilizing AP staff
  • Points out weaknesses in the manuscript and suggests options to strengthen these areas
  • Examines both the big picture and the fine details of a manuscript (including grammar, spelling, and punctuation)
  • Ensures that sections lead logically from one to another, that there is consistency and flow, and that the right amount of information is presented
  • Ensures that conclusions are sound and come from what has been presented
  • Contacts printers to obtain price estimates, printing schedules, etc.; and to discuss the various publication options available
  • Provides the last set of proofreading eyes
  • Safeguards the author’s intellectual property and works to help him or her derive maximum revenue from it
  • Looks for the best ways to market the finished book
  • Takes care of copyright, Cataloging in Publication (CIP), Preassigned Control Number (PCN), and International Standard Book Number (ISBN) issues
