Edwinna Marshall
June 14, 1930 – June 24, 2019

Founder and Former Department Chair
Department of Occupational Therapy, Loma Linda University

Edwinna Marshall, founder and former department chair of the Department of Occupational Therapy, passed away on June 24, 2019, at the age of 89.

In 1957, Edwinna accepted an invitation from Fred B. Moor, MD, Chief of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the White Memorial Hospital, Los Angeles, to establish an educational program for Occupational Therapy at the College of Medical Evangelists (now called Loma Linda University). Upon approval of the Board of Trustees, Edwinna opened the Occupational Therapy program in September, 1959, at the Loma Linda campus of the College of Medical Evangelists. She literally built the program from scratch with little budget, and utilizing a small space in an annex next to the sanitarium, shared with Physical Therapy, and Nursing. The three students who began the OT program in 1959 helped their young director/instructor to scrounge for desks and equipment they could use to set up their program. There were very few OT textbooks in those days, so Edwinna wrote her own syllabi for her students. Edwinna chaired the department of Occupational Therapy for 35 years before she retired in 1993.

Edwinna was recognized for numerous educational and personal accomplishments:

• Woman of Distinction from the Loma Linda Faculty Women’s Club, in 1967.
• Induction into the Roster of Fellows of the American Occupational Therapy Association in 1985.
• Handicapped Woman of the Year from the PILOT Club of San Bernardino, in 1987.
• Life-time Achievement Award from the Occupational Therapy Association of California, in 1992.
• Notable Adventist Women of Today Award in 1995.
• Distinguished Emeritus Professor by the Board of Trustees, Loma Linda University, in 1995.
• Trailblazer Award, School of Allied Health Professions, Loma Linda University, in 2008.
• Leaders & Legacies Society, of the American Occupational Therapy Foundation, in 2015.
