'MissRepresentation' questions media's portrayal of women, girls

The Loma Linda University Campus Chaplains, School of Public Health, School of Behavioral Health and the Domestic Violence Task Force will host a screening of "MissRepresentation" Wednesday, April 10.

"MissRepresentation" is an award-winning documentary that exposes how mainstream media contributes to the underrepresentation of women in positions of power and influence in America. The film challenges the media's limited and often disparaging portrayals of women and girls--portrayals that make it difficult for women to achieve leadership positions and for the average woman or girl to feel powerful herself.

The connection between the perception of empowerment and mental health has been well established. It is also clear that culture and society have a significant influence on self-esteem, self-perception and the skills required to succeed and attain full potential.

As an institution that prepares men and women to become health professionals, Loma Linda University emphasizes the need to foster an environment that encourages and facilitates successful women leaders. Attend the screening and join a conversation about how the Loma Linda University community can help change the way women and girls are portrayed in our culture.

The screening will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Councilors Student Pavilion.
