Bioethics, faith communities series continues with views from Orthodox Christianity Feb. 11

The Center for Christian Bioethics will conclude its Bioethics and Faith Communities series with a presentation by Daniel Hinshaw, MD, titled "Orthodox Christianity: Pilgrimage through Suffering to Healing" Wednesday, Feb. 11.

Dr. Hinshaw's presentation will give an overview of Orthodox Christianity; explain the significance of suffering, mortality and healing in a person's life; and introduce kenosis in the healing of the dying.

Dr. Hinshaw, son of former long-time head of the Loma Linda University School of Medicine, is a professor of surgery at the University of Michigan and founding director of the Palliative Care Consultation Service at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Ann Arbor. His clinical research interests are focused on end of life, spiritual distress and complementary medicine in relieving pain. In 2013, he wrote "Suffering and the Nature of Healing."

On Sabbath, Feb. 14, Dr. Hinshaw will join Rabbi Hillel Cohn and Dr. Shamel Abd-Allah for an interfaith Roundtable Symposium titled "Christians, Jews, Muslims: Is Bioethics a Common Ground?" discussing life, death, suffering, healing and other bioethical and medical dilemmas faced by everyone.

Dr. Hinshaw's presentation will be held from noon to 1 p.m. in the Loma Linda University Medical Center A Level Amphitheater. The roundtable symposium will be held from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the Centennial Complex Damazo Amphitheater.
