Bioethics series on ethical commonalities between faiths begins with Judaism Jan. 28

The Center for Christian Bioethics begins a new series of Bioethics Grand Rounds events focusing on what Judaism, Islam and Orthodox Christianity have in common, asking how the religious views of these communities contribute to better health care and decision making and what we can learn about life, death, suffering, healing and medical dilemmas.

In his presentation, "Judaism's Paths to Judging Medical Dilemmas," Rabbi Hillel Cohn will present traditional and contemporary Jewish views on current bioethical issues, exploring what makes the Jewish ethical thought process unique and how it affects decision making in the clinical setting. Learn how Judaism's perspective on bioethics could make a difference in your personal and professional life.

Rabbi Cohn's presentation will be held Wednesday, Jan. 28, from noon to 1 p.m. in the Loma Linda University Medical Center A Level Amphitheater.

Rabbi Cohn serves as rabbi of Congregation Emanu El in San Bernardino. He earned a doctorate from the Claremont School of Theology, specializing in ethics and communication, and received an honorary doctorate from Hebrew Union College.

Subsequent Bioethics Grand Rounds events include:

  • Wednesday, Feb. 4, noon to 1 p.m., LLUMC A Level Amphitheater "From Mecca to Loma Linda: Islamic Spirituality and Bedside Care," presented by Shamel Abd-Allah, MD.
  • Wednesday, Feb. 11, noon to 1 p.m., LLUMC A Level Amphitheater "Orthodox Christianity: Pilgrimage through Suffering to Healing," presented by Daniel Hinshaw, MD.

The series will conclude with a roundtable discussion, "Jews, Christians, Muslims: Is Bioethics the Common Ground?," with all three presenters and moderated by Roy Branson, PhD, Saturday, Feb. 14, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., in Centennial Complex Damazo Amphitheater.
