LLUH prepares for big one during California ShakeOut drill on Oct. 16

Loma Linda University Health will participate in the Great California ShakeOut earthquake drill Thursday, Oct. 16, at 10:16 a.m.

With 37 million people living and working in the state, a major earthquake could cause unprecedented devastation. The preparation completed now--before a big earthquake--will help determine life after the event. And, with earthquakes an inevitable part of California's future, drills like the Great California ShakeOut ensure that disasters don't become catastrophes.

Loma Linda University Health's objectives for the drill include

  • activating the Emergency Operation Plan for Emergency Protocol Code Triage: External;
  • reviewing earthquake life safety steps by participating in drop, cover and hold on;
  • utilizing the emergency notification system to alert students, employees and faculty;
  • receiving a Disaster Condition Assessment form from every department enterprise-wide;
  • mobilizing damage assessment teams; and
  • practicing building evacuation procedures by using relocation points.

Each department's downtime forms should include any emergency management forms. (Find these forms on VIP).

On Oct. 16 at 10:16 a.m., departments should practice Drop, Cover and Hold On. At the conclusion of the drill, meet to complete the disaster condition assessment form, then submit it to the command center.

A key aspect of the ShakeOut is the integration of earthquake research and lessons learned from decades of social science research about why people get prepared. The result is a teachable moment, on par with having an actual earthquake. The ShakeOut creates a sense of urgency needed for people, organizations and communities to get prepared, to practice what to do to be safe and to learn what plans need to be improved.

The ShakeOut is held statewide the third Thursday of October, organized by the Earthquake Country Alliance. In 2013, the drill involved more than 9.6 million Californians through a broad-based outreach program, media partnerships and public advocacy by hundreds of partners.
