Sabbath School to examine Jeremiah, roles of women and role reversal Aug. 10

Sigve Tonstad, M.D., Ph.D., will present a lecture titled "'A Woman Shall Encompass a Man': When the New is the Norm" Sabbath, Aug. 10 to the Roy Branson and Friends Sabbath School class.

Dr. Tonstad, a professor in both the School of Religion and the School of Medicine, will begin with Jeremiah 31:22, an enigmatic text within the most important chapter of the book, and study role reversals envisioned by Jeremiah, particularly Jeremiah's vision of a gener role reversal going all the way to bedrock. Dr. Tonstad will related Jeremiah to the issue of ordination of women, but will extend to the broad question of how the new can become the norm when norms are usually set by convention.

The Roy Branson and Friends Sabbath School class meets Sabbaths from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in Centennial Complex room 3111.
