The apostle Paul in his final admonitions to the members of the church in Thessolanica penned these words found in 1st Thessalonians 5: 16-18: Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. As we approach the Thanksgiving holiday, our conversation usually turns to things we appreciate and are thankful for. Rarely do I ever hear people give thanks for things that cause distress or pain. Our general inclination is to be thankful for things that make us happy. It seems odd, then, that Paul would instruct the Thessalonians to give thanks in all circumstances. I don’t know about you, but all my circumstances aren’t good. If you read the sequence of verses as one complete thought and not as three unrelated admonitions, you’ll notice how tied together they are. Paul first instructs to rejoice always. How is that possible? We’re constantly bombarded by issues and circumstances that hardly bring joy to our lives. Paul's next statement helps us to understand how being joyful and then being thankful in all circumstances is really possible. Joyfulness and thankfulness in all circumstances can only be realized through a connection with God. Paul describes that connection by writing that we should "pray continually". He is not only referring to the formal prayer we're all familiar with. To pray continually means that we are connecting to God on a consistant basis. Those who “pray continually” recognize God’s consistent presence leading and guiding through all of their circumstances.

In this edition of the Campus Connector we share the story of the PossAbilities program and it’s new title sponsor, Quest Diagnostics. We are very excited that Quest has decided to partner with LLUH in this important community outreach program. Quest is an international company that allows us a much wider platform to share the wonderful work that we’re doing in the community. The other part of this story is that earlier this year we weren’t sure if the program would have a corporate sponsor, at all. God gave us an amazing opportunity to go from a place of comfort embodied in our relationship with San Manuel Band of Mission Indians who have supported PossAbilities financially for many years to uncharted territory where we weren’t sure we would have a sponsor. God blessed us amazingly with this opportunity with Quest. But, He was also blessing when we didn’t know if we had a sponsor for 2015-2017. In another of the Apostle Paul’s letters, he writes, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose. I believe that Loma Linda University Health has been “called according to his purpose”. As a result, despite sometimes challenging circumstances, we can be joyful and thankful because our connection with God guarantees that things will work out for our good. In this Thanksgiving season, I pray that your connection with God grows stronger so that you can experience joy and thankfulness regardless of your circumstances.

God Bless,

Lyndon Edwards

Loma Linda Medical Center East Campus receives 2014 Path to Excellence Award!

National Research recognized top performing organizations at the 20th NRC Picker Patient-Centered Care Symposium September 7 – 9 in San Diego, California. Path to Excellence award recipients were selected from the National Research extensive database of clients within ten categories. Loma Linda University Medical Center East Campus was awarded 'Most Improved Facility' for hospitals 100 to less than 300 beds. For the last 12 months LLUMCEC has been rated by patients as in the top 75th percentile rank. This marks the first time East Campus Hospital has been recognized with such a distinction.

"I was very surprised when we were notified that East Campus had won this award. We didn’t even know there was an award and it wasn’t our goal to win one. The award reflects the tremendous emphasis and effort we’ve applied to developing an excellent patient experience at East Campus. Our team has worked diligently to implement best practices in support of our focus on providing compassionate, patient-centered care. Those efforts have resulted in the improved patient engagement scores that allowed us to be recognized by NRC-Picker. We’re humbled and grateful to be acknowledged in this way by NRC and hope to use the award to inspire other on-going efforts on our campuses to achieve high-level results for patient engagement." Lyndon Edwards, Vice President & Administrator

6882:18069 <![CDATA[Lucky Ducklings]]> Meghan Krebs Earlier this spring a duck was discovered outside of East Campus laying four eggs under a tree. A gardener trying to be helpful, touched the eggs, and the mother abandoned them. When I was younger, I had hatched chickens and ducks, and still had my incubator at home. I volunteered to take the eggs and try to hatch them. After many long weeks of waiting (roughly 45 days), all of the eggs finally hatched. I raised them in a rubbermaid container in my spare bedroom until they were large enough to be outside on their own. I would later find out that there were three females and one male based on their coloring. I then found them a good home with a friends family on their large property with plenty of other poultry to play with. Now they swim in a pond all day and relax. I named them Dewey Deborah, Lewey Lyndon, Daffy Karla and Hewey Jan.

6882:18344 <![CDATA[Campus Quick Notes]]> Pedro R. Payne, Ph.D.
 • As of the month of October, 2014 our avg daily census at East Campus Hospital (EC) was 66 and 8 for Heart & Surgical Hospital (HSH). Employee engagement scores are up! East Campus showed a positive increase over 2012 (+0.08) AND increased the percentage of “Engaged” employees from 53% engaged to 58% AND decreased the percentage of “Not Engaged” and “Actively Disengaged” employees by 4% and 1% respectfully. MOST NOTABLE IMPROVEMENT: Increased ratio of engaged vs. disengaged employees from 7.57:1 (best practice = 8:1) to 9.67:1 WOW! Heart & Surgical Hospital also showed significant increase of +0.13 since the last survey administration. Overall, HSH employee emgagement is at 55%.
 • According to the National Research Corporation, HSH has had a rolling 12-month patient satisfaction score in the 90th percentile! This places HSH among the top hospitals in the nation in terms of patient satisfaction!!! WAY TO GO!
 • Our FTEs per Adjusted Occupied Bed score for EC was 4.27 FTEs and 9.22 FTEs for HSH. According to these latest dashboard metrics both hospitals are performing well below their targets which indicates increased efficiency in staffing.
 • Finally, both hospitals received over 30 positive comments from actual patients as reported by National Research Corporation. Well done team. Let's keep it up!
