6088:42642 <![CDATA[Grant Writing Services]]> Research Affairs Research Affairs has used the grant writing services of McAllister & Quinn (M&Q) over the last year and have noticed a marked increase in the quality of submissions. To make these services go as far as possible, we will be asking departments to pay for half the fee for each project going forward. At the beginning of the project, we will provide an estimate of the costs and will require department approval. If you are interested in M&Q assisting with your next proposal, please contact Research Affairs at 909-558-8544 (ext. 88544) or email ResearchAffairs@llu.edu.

6088:42643 <![CDATA[Coming Oct. 5: A day with Dr. Robert E. Berger, PhD]]> Research Affairs - Industrial Relations About this event

Speaker Dr. Robert E. Berger, PhD author of "A Scientific Approach to Writing for Engineers and Scientists" will present a full day seminar intended to demystify the proposal writing process, address elements of SBIR/STTR proposal, the three distinct ways which faculty members can take advantage of the SBIR/STTR program and the most common mistakes made when writing and how to avoid them. The latter thrust is based on Dr. Berger’s book, "A Scientific Approach to Writing for Engineers and Scientists" (Wiley-IEEE Press)

Speaker:

ROBERT E. BERGER, PHD

Robert Berger, the former Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Program Manager at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), is the author of A Scientific Approach to Writing for Engineers and Scientists (Wiley-IEEE Press). The book is based on his editing of thousands of SBIR/STTR proposals and technical abstracts, both at the DOE and in his private consulting business. The book can be examined using Amazon’s “Look Inside” feature at http://www.amazon.com/Scientific-Scientists-Professional-Engineering-Communication/dp/1118832523.

At the DOE, Dr. Berger was responsible for designing and running the annual SBIR and STTR competitions at the Department of Energy, with final responsibility for the selection of all awards in these programs. His experience with the SBIR and STTR programs goes back even further: for 10 years, he was the Director of the Technology and Innovation Division at the U.S. Small Business Administration, with government-wide oversight responsibilities for technical and commercialization aspects of SBIR and STTR programs. Dr. Berger also has conducted engineering research and technical assessments at the National Institute for Standards and Technology and the Office of Naval Research.

Between 1987 and 1994, Dr. Berger was an Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of Maryland, teaching masters-degree-level courses to adult students in Technology Management. He received a Ph.D. in Mechanics and Materials Sciences from The Johns Hopkins University and was a post-doctoral Research Associate of the National Research Council.
