2015 -16 (FY16) Requests for Applications

The three Komen Training and Career Development awards seek to bridge the funding gap faced by recently graduated PhDs and early faculty as they start their careers in breast cancer research. Grants funded by Komen provide the preparation necessary to compete for independent funding as an established and successful breast cancer researcher.

RFA Release Date: May 6, 2015
Application system open date: May 6, 2015
Pre-Application Submission deadline June 17, 2015

  1. 1.      CAREER CATALYST RESEARCH GRANTS – BASIC/TRANSLATIONAL and CLINICAL

Career Catalyst Research (CCR) Grants are intended to foster promising breast cancer researchers who are in the early stages of their faculty careers by providing support for up to three years of “protected time” for research career development under the guidance of a Mentor Committee. It is expected that awardees will launch independent research careers and successfully compete for subsequent research project funding in breast cancer following the successful completion of a CCR Grant, thereby playing key roles in reducing breast cancer incidence and mortality, with the ultimate goal of ending breast cancer forever. There are two research focus areas: Basic/Translational and Clinical.

$450,000 combined direct and indirect costs; ($150,000 per year for up to 3 years)

  1. 2.      POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP GRANTS – BASIC/TRANSLATIONAL and   CLINICAL

Postdoctoral Fellowship (PDF) Grants are intended to attract and support promising scientists and clinician/scientists who are embarking on careers dedicated to breast cancer research. By providing funding to outstanding postdoctoral/postgraduate fellows under the guidance of a mentor, Komen seeks to ensure that a diverse pool of highly trained scientists will emerge as the next generation of leaders in the field of breast cancer research. These leaders will play key roles in reducing breast cancer incidence and mortality, with the ultimate goal of ending breast cancer forever.

Up to $180,000 direct costs only; ($60,000 per year for 2 to 3 years)

  1. 3.         GRADUATE TRAINING IN DISPARITIES RESEARCH GRANTS

Graduate Training in Disparities Research (GTDR) Grants are intended to establish and/or to sustain a training program for graduate students who are seeking careers dedicated to understanding and eliminating disparities in breast cancer outcomes across population groups. By providing funding to outstanding training programs, Komen seeks to ensure that a diverse pool of highly trained scientists will emerge as the next generation of leaders in the field of breast cancer research focused on disparities in breast cancer outcomes.

Up to $135,000 per year, direct costs only, for up to 3 years

The AHA Board of Directors has approved the topics for the next two Strategically Focused Research Networks (SFRN). The fourth SFRN will focus on WOMEN and the fifth SFRN will focus on HEARTFAILURE

A Network is comprised of three to four institutions, or Centers, working on three projects each that are focused on one strategic area.

Similar to the previous SFRNs, the next two Networks will have their own Request for Application which will require that each submission have an overall application from the Center Director, as well as three proposals from project Principal Investigators in the following science areas:

  • One proposal addressing basic science discovery
  • One proposal addressing clinical science discovery
  • One proposal addressing population science discovery

A Center application can comprise projects from more than one institution, as long as there is a named sponsoring institution, where the Center Director is located and will manage the oversight and financial responsibilities. Thus, applications should convey how these different areas of science will be integrated, both in their scientific discoveries and through joint team communication and integration.
