Congress has not yet passed a budget for FY2013 (which began October 2012). Consequently, many federal agencies are operating under a continuing resolution until March 27, 2013. What does that mean to investigators? Existing federal projects may be funded at reduced levels and federal agencies cannot fund new projects for the FY2013 until a budget is passed.
Remember the mandate to standardize and streamline federal grant submissions? That gave us the Grants.gov we all know and love. The next stage, the Research Performance Progress Report (RPPR), will be rolled out by many federal agencies (including NIH, NSF, DOD, DOW and NASA. More information at http://www.nsf.gov/bfa/dias/policy/rppr/). NIH is currently in transition and will allow investigators to choose either the eSNAP or RPPR mechanism to submit their progress reports. However, all NIH progress reports must be submitted using the RPPR mechanism by April 2013.
NIH has published a revised Grants Policy Statement for FY2013 (effective 10/1/12),http://grants.nih.gov/grants/policy/nihgps_2012/index.htm
NSF’s revised Proposal and Award Policies and Procedures Guide will be effective for proposals submitted on or after January 14, 2013 and can be found at: http://www.nsf.gov/publications/pub_summ.jsp?ods_key=nsf13001.

New monthly seminar series to be hosted by Research Affairs

Research Affairs is pleased to announce a new service for our research community: a monthly seminars on research topics. The presentations will be given on the second Tuesday of each month in the Research Affairs Conference Room (24887 Taylor Street, Suite 202) from 12-1 pm. Lunch will be provided for those who RSVP to Lorraine Sarmiento (lsarmiento@llu.edu) by the preceding Monday afternoon.

Albin Grohar, PhD, executive director of advancement will present “To pursue foundations for research support, or not: that is the question” at the inaugural meeting on December 11, 2012. Areas that Dr. Grohar will cover during his presentation include grant dollar amounts, research areas, deadlines, application instructions, number of grants awarded, and research support from private sector foundations.

The second seminar in the series titled “Faculty Inventions and Patents” will be presented by Carol Grande, director of Research Affairs Technology Transfer, on January 8, 2013.
